How to show gratitude and give back: Meaningful ways to appreciate centre staff

01 Nov 2025

November is the perfect moment to pause and recognise the people who have worked alongside you to keep things moving. It’s an opportunity to show your appreciation for the effort others have put into support, assist and keep you going.

So much of what makes a school successful happens behind the scenes - and often without thanks.

Being appreciated is one of our essential workplace needs. When people feel valued, they are more willing to work with you.

When WE participate in acts of giving, in whatever form, we strengthen our own ability to notice others and build those connections and relationships so important in school/college/centre teams.

Giving is good for everyone.

1. Thoughtful ways to say thank you

Sometimes, the smallest gestures speak the loudest. A few kind words or a shared smile can stay with someone far beyond the school gates.

Personal gestures

  • Handwritten notes
In a digital world, a simple card or thank-you note can feel incredibly special. Mention something specific: a time someone stayed late to help, covered for a colleague, or made you laugh on a hard day.
  • Desk surprises
Place a small treat, motivational quote, or smiley note on desks before staff arrive. These unexpected delights bring instant cheer.
  • Compliment board
Set up a shared board in the staffroom where anyone can leave a note of praise or appreciation. Small things can make a big difference

Collective recognition

  • Shout-out sessions
Use part of your next staff briefing to give public thanks. Invite nominations or surprise someone with a spontaneous acknowledgment.
  • Thank-you wall
Set up a physical or digital “Wall of Thanks” where both staff and students can post positive messages. A few heartfelt words go a long way.

2. Acts of kindness and giving back

Gratitude is not only about gifts - it is about creating a culture of kindness, care, and connection.

Every act of kindness tells our colleagues: I see you, I value you, and what you do matters. (It’s also why I popped a ‘Thank you for making a Difference’ ceramic heart in each of my conference goodie bags this year).

 Team-focused giving

  • Secret Santa (with meaning)
Instead of random gifts, ask people to buy something thoughtful based on shared memories or inside jokes. It makes every exchange personal.
  • Charity drive
Encourage the team to donate to a local cause instead of giving each other gifts. It is a great way to share joy beyond the school gates.

Individual kindness

  • Random acts of kindness week
Organise a week of anonymous good deeds: making tea, leaving a kind note, or offering help. Little surprises like this can make a big impact.
  • Holiday cheer basket
Create a communal basket of snacks, treats, or wellness goodies. Let staff dip in when they need a boost - it is an instant mood-lifter.

3. A thoughtful gift guide for colleagues

Looking for thank-you gifts for teachers and colleagues? Here are some easy-to-source ideas that show you care without breaking the budget.

Practical gifts

  • Stationery sets
Think personalised notebooks, colourful pens, or planner kits - perfect for the ultra-organised (or those aspiring to be!).
  • Coffee & tea kits
Specialty teas, coffee beans, or a branded travel mug are always appreciated in the staffroom.

Thoughtful keepsakes

  • Personalised items
A bag, pen, or keychain with a positive affirmation or name shows extra thought.
  • Memory mementos
A framed team photo, custom-designed ornament, or a quote collage from students makes a lasting keepsake.

Wellness-focused gifts

  • Relaxation kits
Bundle up items like bath salts, calming teas, or candles to help your team unwind.
  • Self-care subscriptions
A one-month wellness app, audiobook credit, or subscription is a modern way to show you care.

Make gratitude part of your school culture

Gratitude does not have to be elaborate. At its heart, it is about noticing, acknowledging, and appreciating the everyday efforts that make your school a great place to work and learn.

When we take the time to say thank you - through kind words, shared experiences, or thoughtful gestures - we send a powerful message: you matter. And when giving becomes a regular part of school life, it strengthens not only individual relationships but school culture too.

As you close out the school year, consider how you can give back—with sincerity, warmth, and an open heart. Because when appreciation is part of the culture, everyone benefits.
