Registering, achieving and certificating for the Exams Officer Professional Standards

The Exams Officer Professional Standards provide a framework, which includes certification, for senior leaders to utilise to provide an effective professional development and appraisal programme for their exam officer each academic year

The relevant senior leader should register their exams officer for the standards, set annual targets after discusion with their exams officer, record progress against each target, and claim certification upon completion. Further information is available from the Senior Leader and Line Manager Exam Support website, where an exams officer can also be registered for the standards and where certification can be claimed upon completion

In March 2024, the NAEO, in conjunction with The Learning and Skills Office and The Exams Office, launched a website dedicated to supporting senior leaders/line managers in managing examinations/assessments within their centre. From this website, a senior leader/line manager is able to register their exams officer onto the Exams Officer Professional Standards programme and obtain a certificate to evidence achievement each academic year.

The Exams Officer Professional Standards are structured as follows:

Register for the Exams Officer Professional Standards

The senior leader responsible for examinations/assessments within a centre, or line manager, can register an exams officer for the Exams Officer Professional Standards each academic year by visiting this page of the Senior Leader & Line Manager Exam Support website.

Once the senior leader/line manager has completed the registration form, an email will be sent to the exams officer and senior leader/line manager detailing how the standards can be achieved and how the exams officer can obtain/will receive their certificate.

Achieving the Exams Officer Professional Standards

The exams officer and senior leader/line manager should meet to set targets and sign the Values and Attributes statement. This statement confirms a commitment to maintain the integrity and security of the examination system within a centre.

Targets should be based around knowledge and understanding and the skills required to perform the exam officer role.

Regular meetings should take place where progress against targets is identified and recorded, and additional support arranged, if required, to achieve all targets.

Progress made towards achieving the standards should be also recorded on the relevant page within the senior leader and line manager exam support website.

Claiming the Exams Officer Professional Standards certificate

Once the senior leader/line manager is satisfied that all targets have been achieved, they can claim certification by confirming completion in all three key areas (knowledge and understanding, key skills and Values and Attributes statement) via the relevant page within the senior leader and line manager exam support website.

Exams Officer Professional Standards toolkit

In late September/early October, a toolkit will be available on this page to guide exams officers and senior leaders/line managers through all aspects of the Exams Officer Professional Standards.
