From pressure to perspective: Reflecting after the exam period

27 Jun 2026

For many people in schools and colleges, exam season appears to end when the last student leaves the exam hall.

For exams officers and data managers, however, the experience is very different.

For months, you have been operating at an extremely high level of vigilance. Every timetable, entry, room plan, access arrangement, deadline has been important. You know that small slips or errors could have had major consequences. Through it all, you’ve stayed focused, alert and committed to maintaining the highest standards. Phew!

And now, before that long-awaited results day arrives, you have a valuable opportunity.

To pause. To reflect. To recognise what you’ve accomplished.

The work nobody fully sees

One of the challenges of being an exams officer or data manager is that much of our success is invisible.

When exams run smoothly, very few people notice.

  • Students arrive where they should be
  • Papers are available
  • Access arrangements are in place
  • Entries are correct
  • Data is accurate
  • Results are processed correctly
  • Everything simply works

Yet behind that smooth flow, we know, lies months of planning, checking, coordinating, communicating and problem-solving.

Success often looks like "nothing went wrong." That in itself is a significant professional achievement.

Take a moment to acknowledge that.

It didn’t happen by accident.

It happened because you, a skilled professional made it happen.

What exams really represent

Let’s reflect for a moment, on what this year's examination process represents.

  • Exams provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned.
  • They allow teachers to see the impact of their hard work and dedication.
  • They validate years of effort invested by departments, pastoral teams, support staff and school leaders.
  • They reflect the mission of the entire school community.

Most importantly, they provide students with a stepping stone into the next stage of their lives.

For some students, these exams will open doors to college, university, apprenticeships or employment.

For others, they represent proof that they can overcome challenge, pressure and uncertainty.

Your role has helped make that possible.

You may not be standing in the classroom delivering lesson or collecting certificates on results day.

But your contribution forms a critical part of every student's journey.

Living on high alert

Many exams officers describe exam season as operating in a state of constant readiness. There is always another deadline and issue that may require immediate attention.

But the human body is not designed to stay on high alert indefinitely.

When that happens, we often get weary, find it hard to concentrate, have interrupted sleep, less energy and dis-ease experiences.

We know that many of us simply push through because there’s work to be done. Students are depending on us and deadlines are immoveable! So, we just keep going.

But recovery matters too. And now’s the time to allow yourself time to rest and restore your energy – if you can.

Give yourself permission to pause, because recovery is not the reward you’ve earned after working so hard. Your recovery is essential to maintaining the same standard of administration you’ve shown this season during the next academic year.

Take credit for what went well

Many people in education naturally focus on what could have been better.

I’m going to ask you stop for a moment and recognise what you achieved here.

You were part of the process that enabled students to demonstrate their learning and move forward into the next stage of life.

That deserves recognition. You made a difference.

There’s many who would thank you if they could. So, I’m thanking you here, on their behalf, for your commitment and work.

I know what it takes.
